Reading your words is like putting on a comfortable pair of hiking shoes that haven't been worn in a while. I've missed them, and they just feel right.

For a moment I thought my husband had emailed this to me (also called Jason) as I’m constantly talking about hiking the Caminos and he is constantly cursing his knees if we go hiking together. Thanks for sharing the reality of a long hike on a 50 something body. I like to think I’m in good shape for such a pilgrimage, but the reality is hiking every day for miles and miles will beat one up if we’re not paying attention. I’m sorry you had to deal with the pain afterwards.

As an aside, If you ever get bored of the Central Coast, Hood River really is great! Do not miss the Bay Area at all. I’m sure your friend’s brewery would still be happy to have you (I’m guessing it’s either Ferment or Pfriem). The beer here is stellar!!

Good luck with the knees!

Thanks for sharing. Looking back on the Camino, do you think there’s anything you could/should have done differently that might have prevented the injury? I feel like I would fall into the camp of feeling prepared for such a hike only to find out otherwise.

Well, if my orthopedist is right, don't cinch your backpack hip straps too tightly. But besides that, I don't think so. I had no issues with the distances or the difficulty of the walks so it wasn't a training issue as far as I know.

I'm 37 and I too pushed too hard too fast on the leg press at the gym in my rush to get to 200 lbs. What a bad idea it was. I experienced some pain around my right knee, but later I found out it was just "tightness". It persisted for many months though. But I happened to do consecutive days of yoga to give my wife company, and the pain/tightness magically disappeared, or at least kept at bay. Do give yoga a shot, it might work for you too. Especially the downward dog and the pigeon poses can really benefit the knee and thigh areas.
