Jason, I'm not surprised that you had a "letdown" after the Camino. I had a friend who went through something similar when he completed the Appalachian Trail, and I suspect it's a common occurrence after achieving a major milestone. I've had smaller, but similar letdowns (e.g., when I completed my marathon), and suspect it's just part of the process that doesn't get much press. Thanks for being so transparent with your "re-entry," I suspect there will be others out there who benefit from you sharing your reality. Glad to see you back online, and was happy when I got the email notification that there was a new episode of Two Sides of FI. Welcome back...

Thanks, Fritz. I always appreciate your perspective and your time taken to check out my/our content. Yep, it's talked about by many! I think for me it was largely about the positive feelings about the trail experience being swamped by my body "letting me down". I hope you're having a great summer. Take care

Hello Jason, I stumbled yesterday over your YT Video with Eric and could immediately relate to most of the things you found out in the last years. I am in a similar situation, retired 4 years ago and now 49 years old, living in Germany.

The FIRE scene here has the same distribution of content as you mentioned, it is nearly 100% about how to reach it, tools, financial basics. This is important, but to be honest, very boring after you reached FI.

What I wanted to ask you is, what are your favourit sites you read handling all the topics that become relevant after RE?

Thank you and wish you a nice weekend with your family, Florian

Thanks, Florian! It's great to hear from you. I'll be honest and say that I haven't dug too much into other post-RE content, barring Fritz Gilbert's Retirement Manifesto. If you haven't stumbled on those videos yet, we've spoken with him a few times. This one is certainly the most relevant to this topic: https://youtu.be/H0WVYePTheI?si=InuogoRlBiplrdyi

Wish you all the best,

Jason

Jason

I recently retired and spent the last 25 years dealing in pain management. Often times people want ( or should I say, the physician) wants to perform surgery. Be very very careful, it is a slippery slope filled with patients left in misery. Oh yea, another surgery will fix that. Five surgeries later it is often a hopeless situation. DO NOT RUSH TO HAVE SURGERY!!!!!!!

Best of luck, depression and pain go hand and hand.

Thanks, John. That's great advice. I'm happy to say that I've seen good improvement with some help from acupuncture, massage, and the passage of time. I'm on the path!

Only 2 weeks in Peru?

My wife and I have been very fortunate to have travelled much more than most throughout our working lives. We are Australian, but are currently living in France (since Nov last year) for one final work assignment before FIRE. We lived in Dubai for 6 years from 2014-2020.. We are 52 and 45. My wife has already stopped work and I will join the party in the coming months, or maybe 12 months.

One thing we know with no shadow of a doubt is we don’t want to fly long haul anymore for short vacations. Living in Dubai and Europe we have been spoiled for short trips, and we are done with the rushing. Future vacations for us will be 1 month+ if long haul flights are involved.

We travelled through South America in our 30s, when I was able to have a mini career break, and one thing I encourage you to think about is that the elevation at Cusco takes a little adjusting to. Cuzco is a beautiful city and spending an extra week there to acclimatise is cheap and would be very enjoyable. If you can find the time I highly recommend adding 5 days or a week at the beginning of your trip just to hang out in Cuzco and get used to the elevation a little, before you throw yourself into 2 weeks of what will be amazing experiences.

By the way I love your YouTube channel and have watched every minute of it (probably twice over). Your conversations are so relateable. I have been on the cusp f fire since 2019, but for various reasons find myself still working. I can not believe how much my perspectives on life, and my hopes and dreams for life have changed over the past 5 years, and how much my life is different to just 5 years ago. I enjoyed hearing your own recount of your last 4 years and how you continue to evolve. Nothing stays static for long it seems.

Yep, between pets and a son newly off to college, that's the duration that works for us presently. We aim to start taking much longer trips beginning next year.

Thanks for the tips and for your support! Best wishes to you and your wife!

Hi Jason, I'm just figuring out this Substack thing, not sure how it works....

I replied directly to your July 1 blog email and Camino blog email from a few months ago. However I didn't hear back from you so I suspect you never received them? I'm guess responding directly to them is not the way to communicate, vs chiming in here on substack?

Hi Jason, are you open to connecting, or keeping it just to this blog?

Wow, two of my favorite FI content creators in one blog comment section! As Frtiz is aware (I am his San Diego twin :-), I recently RE'd (was not by choice). I was grateful that I had been planning for it to come next year, so I was not caught off guard. A huge part of that planning was listening/reading as much as I could from both of you! Jason, I only started listening to Two Sides about a year ago, so it's been great to go back to the "early days" and listen/learn about so many great topics. I was re-listening to your podcast today and realized you have a blog, so here I am. Oddly, I was listening to a Fritz appearance on the Long View before that, so I may be a "roadie" of you guys! Thanks again for all the great content that has helped me and will continue to help me as I pursue this journey.
